ABORIGINAL INFLUENCES ON FASHION

29 February 2016

We were interested to read this article detailing clothes, textiles and accessories by Aboriginal designers which will be shown at Melbourne Fashion Festival.

It’s interesting how the bright colours and vibrant patterns of a lot of Aboriginal art can be easily adapted to work as clothing, or textile design. There is not as much of a separation between the different creative disciplines as we find in Western art.

JGM Mart have been collaborating with Orlebar Brown on a range of swimwear designs. The designs are based on paintings by aboriginal artists that we've been working with for several years. The vibrant patterns used by the artists worked perfectly for the range of designs that Orlebar Brown came up with, full of energy and colour. Two of the works that were used as inspiration are pictured above, on the left Annie Petyarre Hunter’s ‘Arowilya Awelye’ and on the right Lily Hargraves’ ‘Turkey Dreaming’.

We’ll reveal full details of the collaboration soon!
